WHO CAN TAKE PART?
The Tour de Pannal Challenge is open to everyone, whether you are in 1st Pannal Scouts, or just fancy having a go!
WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?
Your group need to be reasonably fit and be prepared for around a 3 hour hike through hilly and likely muddy countryside. Conditions on the ground will vary depending on the recent weather, and you might be wading through inches of water. Parts of the route are on open road without pavements or verges so you need to assess the ages and suitability of who will be in your group.
DO I NEED TO LET SOMEONE KNOW I'M DOING THE CHALLENGE?
No, just turn up and do it! Because of the ongoing restrictions due to COVID-19, we are not able yet to arrange group activities so for the moment this will be a family challenge. Check out the Route page for more information.
HOW DO I RECORD MY RESULT?
Once you've completed the challenge, let us know on tourdepannal@1stpannalscouts.org.uk. Please include your name, section (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers), and a snapshot of your time say from your stop watch or Strava activity (other fitness trackers are available). We'd also love to see any photos you've taken for our gallery.
CAN I ADD MY NAME TO THE LEADERBOARD?
Yes! There are currently two wooden leaderboards outside the front door of the scout hut, one for 1st Pannal Scouts, and one for everyone else. Write your name and time on one of the sticks, then stick it on in the right place with the fastest time at the top of the board. If you're a scout, make sure you also include which section you belong to in brackets. For example you could put "B. Grylls (Cubs) 2h 35m". And if there are no sticks left - no worries, we will add your name once we've made some more!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Nothing. Nowt. Zilch. This is all about getting out and exploring our neighbourhood. But if you're feeling generous, we're raising money for the RNLI and any contribution, however small, will be hugely appreciated. Click here for more information about our RNLI initiative.
WHAT SHOULD I TAKE WITH ME?
If you're a member of 1st Pannal, think about a good hike packing list. Be prepared! This is Yorkshire so the weather can be anything, check it before you set off. Walking boots, warm clothes and waterproofs are recommended as well as a sun hat and cream! Take a drink and a snack (easter eggs are good). We always recommend taking a printed copy of the map. Hand gel for after the stiles, etc. Scouts will know that there are *always* extra points for best use of a necker too...
DOES IT COUNT AS A 'HIKES AWAY'?
Yes!
